2 November 1, 2018 Dear Nicasio Families, Thank you to those families who stayed for our Halloween parade yesterday morning. Your ghosts and goblins were adorable. I hope you enjoy the photos included with this letter. Can you guess what the staff costume theme was this year? If not, ask your children! Yesterday we also had our monthly all-school assembly. Congratulations to the recipients of October s life skill awards, Kayla H., Valeria D., and Daniel S. These students were chosen by their classroom teachers because they exemplified wellness throughout the month. Also, congratulations to our Teacher of the Month, Ms. Kristy! Our student council representatives did a great job introducing November s life skill, generosity. The results of the Walk-A-Thon are in, and thank you to everyone for participating, volunteering, and supporting students as they gathered pledges. I cannot say enough about how important the Nicasio School Foundation is to providing a well-rounded educational experience for our students. Individual winners received prizes during yesterday s assembly, and our 3/4/5 class will receive a class ice cream party for raising the most money. Please stop by our school office this week to visit our ofrenda in honor of Día de los Muertos. All families are encouraged to bring photos of departed loved ones to share. Please see the announcement in Cougar Tracks for more information. Thank you to Ms. Alice and Judith Kirkland for organizing this annual tradition. Please note that on Wednesday, November 7 th we will be conducting a campus lockdown drill during the school day, followed by an Emergency Student Release to Parents drill beginning at 1:35 pm. While it is never pleasant to think of dangerous situations occurring at our school, please know that our staff is knowledgeable, trained, and prepared. Practicing our procedures and protocols is so important. Thank you for your participation in our drill. As a reminder, you will be required to park and show your identification at pick-up. Students will be released only to adults listed on his/her emergency card. All the best, Barbara Finally, don t forget to switch your clocks this Sunday for the end of daylight saving time!
6 DIA de los MUERTOS OFRENDA * DAY of the DEAD ALTAR * NOVEMBER 1-9 Once again, Nicasio School will celebrate and honor loved ones who are no longer with us. As part of celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), there will be an ofrenda/altar set up in the school office Nov In Spanish classes, students have been creating beautiful works of art that will be exhibited with the ofrenda/altar. In addition, all families and students are encouraged to bring small pictures of loved ones (people and/or pets) and/or small items that represent them. The more families share, the more beautiful and heart-warming the display. This is an annual tradition at Nicasio School that families, students and visitors enjoy stopping by to view in the office. Please join us in celebrating those you love and sharing them with your Nicasio School community. You can bring photos and small items to the office to be placed on the altar/ofrenda. Please label all items you bring with your family name so that we can be sure to get them safely back to you. If you need more information, please contact Alice Ballery or Judith Kirkland and they will be happy to help. Thank you very much! Muchas gracias!

8 Nicasio School Lockdown Drill - followed by a Simulated Emergency Student Release to Parents Wednesday, November 7, 2018 On Wednesday, November 7 th, all students, teachers and staff will participate in our first lockdown drill of the school year. This exercise will take place from 1:15-1:35pm. EMERGENCY STUDENT RELEASE TO PARENTS DRILL STARTS AT 1:35pm. Following the lockdown drill, students, teachers and staff will assemble in the MPR to practice our Emergency Student Release to Parents plan. This drill will require the participation of all parents or authorized adults planning to pick up students that day. This exercise will help familiarize our school community with the protocols for releasing students to parents/authorized adults following an actual emergency. Please note the following regarding the student release drill: Anyone arriving to pick up a student on November 7 th (and every day) must be named on that student s list of authorized Drivers/Emergency Contacts. Upon arrival, parents/other authorized adults will be asked to form a line at the Student Request Table located outside the north doors of the MPR. You will be asked to show a driver s license or other photo ID. Because the release process will take longer than normal, parents/other authorized adults may arrive as early as 1:35pm and no later than 2pm. Students will be released in the order in which they have been requested by their parents/other authorized adults. Be prepared for rain! This drill will take place rain or shine, and the Student Request and Release waiting areas for parents/guardians are outside the MPR. Thank you in advance, for your patience, cooperation and participation!
