4 Helping Hands Report to the Parish During the last half of 2014, the members of Helping Hands have served our OLL parishioners in a variety of ways. We have: Hosted 5 funeral receptions at the request of bereaved families. Presented 19 Baptismal Scrolls in recognition of the sacrament. Welcomed 13 newly registered parishioners with information packets about parish organizations. Provided sweet treats and volunteer workers for the Treat Walk at the October parish festival. Hosted receptions after the annual Memorial Mass in November and the OLL Choir Christmas concerts in December. Coordinated the annual parish Christmas Outreach. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of OLL parishioners, 97 families in need were able to celebrate Christmas with gifts and good food. Helping Hands members and other volunteers also baked, wrapped and distributed Christmas cookies to each family receiving assistance. Prayed for the intentions of our members and fellow parishioners at our weekly 1:00 pm Tuesday prayer group. We are always looking for new members, so if you are interested in joining Helping Hands and assisting with these corporal and spiritual works of mercy, look for the enrollment forms in the church vestibules or call Teri Guy at for more information. No meetings required just a willingness to help! Knights of Columbus Council 3950 All parishioners and guests are invited to join us on the evening of February 4 for a presentation on Catholic China. Sister Jeanette WORLD DAY OF THE SICK MASS Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone Principal Celebrant Saturday, February 7, 2015, 11:00 AM Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption 111 Gough Street at Geary, San Francisco Help remind Catholics in Congress that they cannot be pro-abortion Newly elected and returning members of the 114 th Congress took their oaths of office on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Among them are some who claim to be both Catholic and pro-abortion. Priests for Life is asking you to help remind t hem that you cannot be both. Tens of thousands signed on to our recent Letter to the Speaker of the House. Now, we're asking you to sign on to a letter expressing our outrage that these politicians try to have it both ways...on one hand, appealing to their Catholic constituencies with the notion that even though their actions show their pro-abortion stance, they are Catholics in good standing. But on the other, they appeal to their pro-abortion constituencies by upholding legal abortion. Let us remind the members of the 114 th Congress of the fact that human rights... belong to each of us because we are human, from the moment of conception until the moment of our death. 5 Dear Friends, During the past two weeks, I have heard the refrain: If Father Brian is pleading poverty, why do we have two new stained glass windows? To be completely transparent, let me tell you the story behind these windows. Two years ago, the previous pastor and a parishioner came up with the idea that they wanted to beautify the church. In order to do that, they wanted to put in some stained glass windows. A long time parishioner died leaving us with some money. So it was decided by these two individuals, that of the $50,000 it would cost for the windows, $40,000 would come from the bequest and the parishioner would put in the other $10,000. Everyone, except these two people, did not want these windows because we couldn t afford it! There were many other needs in the parish and school that needed to be addressed. The stained glass windows were completely off the radar as far as needs go. The Pastoral Council, the Finance Council, our Parish Manager were all against putting in these windows. When I came on board as your pastor in July, the first thing I tried to do was rescind the contracts for these windows. I knew how it would look, that people would surmise that OLL must be doing pretty well financially in putting in $50,000 worth of stained glass windows. The contracts were already signed and there was nothing I could do about it. The money had already been spent, so my hands were tied. That, in essence, is the story of the stained glass windows, windows that nobody wanted except for the previous pastor and a parishioner. On a happier note, our own Deacon Alex was named one of the three outstanding deacons in the Archdiocese last Friday night at the Annual Knights of Columbus Clergy Dinner. Congratulations Alex! I, along with the Altar Society, are trying to keep the church neat and clean for you. Unfortunately, some people are littering the church with, what I describe, as religious junk. Please know that as soon as I see these materials in our church, I will toss them in the recycling bin. Thank you for your cooperation! The Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA) is beginning in the next week or two. Our goal this year is $107,000. Stay tuned! Ash Wednesday will be here in a couple of weeks. February 18 to be exact. (It seems like yesterday we were celebrating Christmas. Where did the time go?) Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 9am (School Mass), 6pm (English Mass), and 7:30pm (Spanish Mass). We will also be having a simple prayer service (no Mass) at 12:15pm for those who want to receive ashes. Happy Super Bowl Sunday! (Go Seahawks!!) Father Brian

(Go Seahawks!!)
